GfK Retail and Technology, the global leader in providing market and sales information on technical consumer goods, has announced that Blu-ray sales have accelerated to record levels in Japan. Their latest figures show that "in the first week of November 2008, Blu-ray Disc Recorders have surpassed a 50% market share for DVD Recorders in unit terms." GfK also report that "Blu-ray Disc Recorders are replacing DVD Recorders 1.5 times faster than DVD Recorders replaced VHS Recorders."

Blu-ray transition outpacing DVD recorders

In addition to this impressive growth, according to GfK’s retail audit survey, Blu-ray Disc Recorders are replacing DVD Recorders 1.5 times faster than DVD Recorders replaced VHS Recorders.

DVD recorders exceeded 10% market share in the fifth week of April 2002 and continued to grow steadily, eventually surpassing 50% after 82 weeks in the fourth week of November 2003. In comparison, Blu-ray Disc Recorders exceeded 10% market share in the fifth week of October 2007 and after 53 weeks, in the first week of November 2008, surpassed 50%.

One of the principal reasons for this quicker rate of change is the rise in sales of Flat Panel TVs, enabling viewers to experience digital high definition broadcasting. Blu-ray Recorders can record digital high definition broadcasting without any drop in quality, which has assisted the accelerated demand for this product.

This isn't impressive at all. How many people actually bought a DVD Recorder? I don't know a single one.

You would be surprised. Considering you can't buy VHS tapes anywhere anymore, people buy these to record stuff. My dad owns an electronic store and sells quite a few DVD recorders still and has in the past sold well.

It wasn't even 2 weeks ago Zeus posted a report that blu-ray only holds 10% of movie disc sold though. So what are they doing with these recorders/players.

i dont see where they are all selling as far as i know in japan there arent that many model bluray burners set top boxes atleast not enough to be seen over the millions of dvd burners that seem to be replacing read only dvd players. i want to see solid numbers not just some "big name company that knows this stuff but we just heard of them today" sort of crap.

here's my words smartass:

thank god some other people like myself have purchased bd-r dl recorders. i'd use my plextor bd-r dl recorder all the time if the media would come down in price.

now get back to that sony shaft L33T, dunno why you always bring my name up, i think there's a crush going on here and i'm not feeling too f'n flattered to be honest about it.

this is actually a big deal in japan.

in the USA, Tivo is big, but in japan, DVD recorders were the big thing.

Bluray recorders doing well over there is notable.

One thing you all missing out on; LaserDisc was big in Japan too.
