My plasma is a panasonic 42pz80.

it will accept upto 1080i through component.

it will only accept 1024x768 over vga

it seems the only way to get 1080p via the set is through hdmi.

are there any cheap adapters or anything i can ue to obtain a 1080p signal?

I know some may say 1080i is enough as the xbox games are mostly 720p anyway, but I am also looking to stream 1080p films to the 360 to be shown on the plasma too, which is where i will miss it, especially after getting an award winning 1080p plasma.

There are adapters that change the standard AV port to HDMI, they generally cost around the $75 mark.
Two that come to mind straight away are the Nyko one and the XCM one, just make sure its 1080p.

There are also some TV's that support 1080p over component. Although, I don't think a new TV is what you're looking for. haha

is there any advantage in converting a 1080i signal to 1080p if the TV already accepts 1080i? Unless you can force the 360 push a 1080p signal out the components I cant see the advantage (unless I have missed something)

The 360 does support 1080p over components, but some TV's don't. I know because I was using 1080p over components before I bought an HDMI cable.
