would it be possible for a manufacturer to buy a game (e.g. gow2) and then use their own disc pressing machinery to make "official" pressed games which are a fraction of the price?

the reason i ask is becuase if anybody with a disc pressing machine can get a pressed disc, make a dye from it and then make copies of that disc in the official way then why arent they?

im assuming that these games would have to be pressed onto the same media (dual layers) and then would work in consoles that have no mod/ are standard

I don't know much about this topic, I'd also like to know more specifics about why it wouldn't work if anyone knows.

I would imagine it possible to do, but it would be just like making your own money, very costly to make and hard to do.

me too, if the dimples in a pressed dvd are 1's and the spaces are 0's, why cant you press your own discs from a master disc (a brought console game)?

if thats all there is to it, then i find it hard to believe that someone somewhere (like china) hasnt done this yet. they would make millions

I'm sure china do it, cos they always doing cheap import dvd's and stuff. Plus I hear in news people getting caught doing counterfeit dvd's that look like real thing just hologram gives them away, so It must be possible.

Game company tend to use big machines that cost thousands, the actual disc it self is not much to make, just the cost of machines and running them. I doubt they would sell the machines to just anyone either.

If you can produce a master, there are lots of shops in China that will make a run of discs for you.

And yes, you can re-create a master from a final disc but because of the way the discs are made the only reasonable way is to scan the surface of the disc with an Scanning Electron Microscope and use the mapping created by that to make the master.

This is how Datel was able to make the Action Replay for GC. IIRC they scanned all the security info off of one of the NHL discs and recreated these characteristics on the master for the AR. At one point they had an article on it on their website... Buried in an ad for them being "the best reverse engineering firm", which would be IBM in my personal opinion.

In any case, true counterfeit DVD's and games are out there. You can pick them up in streetside shops in Japan and China, I have even seen them a couple of times in New York.

Here i got some pictures of a chinese copy if anyone is interrested .(bought for 5RMB )
They do look pretty good in my opinion , the printing quality on top can compete with originals anytime. On the side the data is written the disc also looks pretty much like an original disc , what i mean is it doesnt look like its burnt with a burner so i guess they are all pressed here. But still u need a flashed firmware to play them (yes they are just made from iso releases from the internet )which means for some reasons they cant recreate the original disc although they may have a pressing station its not possible for them . In theory the could go to a store buy an original scan the disc with a microscope and then reproduce it but there is something stopps them from doing so.Just dont know what it is :p
