A way to get speed up your PSN downloads by over a 100 percent?

A gamer believes he has had a eureka moment and found a way to speed up slow PSN downloads. It is believed that if you queue up everything you wanted to download and individually download it from the store menu without a background download, it will increase your speed by over 100 % and it also pre-installs content for you.



Okay, so it might not be Sonic speedy fast downloads. But an increase in speed none the less... Tonight I was DLin' some content I had been missing out on the last week due to band rehersals and some light work here and there... Now normally I would've just Background downloaded all of my stuff and walked away from it until it was done -- I'm glad I didn't.

A big complain with the PSN is the fact when you DL something of the store you then have to install it. This means the long process becomes longer... Well, tonight I found out that if you que up all you want to DL and individually Download it from the store menu or your drop down download list, without doing a background download, it not only increased my speed from an average of 1mb every 4 seconds to 1 mb every 1 second to 2 seconds, but it also pre-installs your content for you. So you don't have to go back out and manually do it from your xmb.

For real speed up of my downloads I use the CF3B5's PS3 Proxy GUI to obtain the URL of the content that I want to download from the PSN store (demo, movie or full game).

Then I download the content to the PC using a download accelerator (ie. GetRight let you download a file with multiple connections to a single or multiple servers). I also use multiple mirror servers for increased speed (most of the content on zeus.dl.playstation.net is also replicated on poseidon.dl.playstation.net, b0.ww.np.dl.playstation.net and sonycoment-0.vo.llnwd.net through sonycoment-9.vo.llnwd.net.)

When the download is completed in the PC, then I upload the content to the PS3 at full speed using the CF3B5's PS3 Proxy GUI.

Other advantages of the proxy method are:
- If you have 2 or more PS3, you only download the file once.
- If you have a slow connection at home, you can download the file from another place with faster connection, then install the content with the proxy.
- You can backup your downloads in case you need to delete the files from the PS3, and reinstall them later without having to re-download the files.

I have found the best way is to select it all for background download then select the continue downloads then power off option. It is not only faster but it also installs them all.

I've actually noticed being on a cable connection is a lot faster and gets rid of this problem. Since I got to Uni, my speeds on a 2MB connection have been quicker than my BT 2MB connection.

I downloaded WipeoutHD, which is just under a gigabyte. On a 5.5 mbps connection that should take just over half an hour. Took well over an hour. I thought it was just mine that was slow.

mine took 23 mins... on launch day... and i have a relatively slow connection

Add another slow PSN downloader to your list. I'm on a whopping 12.0 Mbps provider. I use 360/PS3/Wii wireless. The 360 wireless is still slow IMO; Wii wireless is used very little. But, when I d/l off PSN, it is like a snail crawling. I can hit just about 3.0 Mbps d/l from the newsgroups. So, it is not my connection and never was. It seems to be hit or miss too. Some people using wireless are having no issues; or have low standards of what they consider a fast connection...not sure. Others, like myself, notice extended time periods for d/l's that should not be experienced especially when you have the bandwith to accommodate faster d/l's. I'm not about to go messing around with anything on it as I don't want to screw up what little speed I am getting out of my $600 PS3!
