Joystiq report Nintendo have recently filed a patent with the catchy title “Game information storage medium and game system using the same”, which may be related to the Revolution. The patent details the operation of an emulator and storage system embedded within a different system, and sounds suspiciously like the Virtual Console features touted to be part of the Revolution.

This patent implies a number of things, including the fact that the Revolution may have no dedicated hardware for emulation of older systems—also, since character selection comes before the game starts, new characters may be available to revitalise old games. By supporting emulation with “no unnecessary re-coding”, we may see much better backwards compatibility with the Revolution than the first of the next-gen consoles, the Xbox 360, has managed.

I doubt that "character selection" menu means you can select a character before the game starts. Looks to me more like a way of seeing all games in which that character appears.. and letting you choose one to play.

Like the IMDB-- except for games :)

**** I can't wait for revolution..

If the games were written in a modular way back then, then it might be possible to have a character selection before a game, but thats one side of it. I am more excited by the controls!! Hows about using the new control system to play e.g. super castlevania with revolution controller ?

i'm thinking it's more of the thing Sega did back when it had that Sonic & Knuckles cartridge, where you could open the top part and slide in Sonic2 or Sonic3 and play as Knuckles in those games.

Maybe you could see the character, pick him to play in the game, and it's as easy as editing the ROM file to replace a certain character with another one (which the revolution would do automatically, I assume). This way you can play say.... Toad or Yoshi on the very first Super Mario Brothers...maybe even change the abilities they get, who knows...

Great for playing small games again that people have beat 100x times over :D

But I will have to agree with Souzar, the controller is going to be the best part... I'm still undecided whether I should get a PS3/Xbox360 but I do know for sure I will be getting a Revolution, just to try out the new controls... that is something that reviews and images and previews can't do justice... you gotta try it to see how you like it...
