well, i've been thinking about starting liteon key retreival over the last few days, but ran into a snag.

all the rs232 convertors use a serial connection, but the laptop i use has no serial port, so i have 3 choices.

1. use a serial to usb adaptor with the rs232 (would this work with dvdkey32?)

2. buy a serial pcmcia card (but, it leaves me with no sata ports, since i use a pcmcia card for that. does dvdkey rely on the sata? or does it get the keys.bin, inquiry.bin and identify.bin from the rx and tx on the power connection?)

3. wait for the connectivity kit v3 or xtractor 360 and buy one of them.

would either 1. or 2. work? i really dont want to have to spend £25-30 on option 3 if i dont have to.

cheers.
(did a google search and recieved nothing from what i could see)

dvdkey relies on sata,as the data is pulled off the drive via sata.you need to get the key.bin without it you wont get a key also you need the inquiry.bin which is used to do proper spoofing of replacement drive.

so if you dont have a usb port as well as a sata one on the laptop you are scuppered.

would it be possible to use a sata pcmcia card and a serial to usb adaptor?

(theres plenty of usb ports but only one pcmcia bay)

well if i am interpretting the maximus liteon devices details correctly it looks like it will dump the data by sata but, instead of using serial connection you can use usb.if you see the video that demonstrates it,you see it being used first with an rs232 cable, but,it shows dvdkey being used, then it shows it being used with a usb lead.
