I posted this at another Xbox site, apparently there they are useless.
Anyway, my friends Xbox which is softmodded, won't seem to read any CD-RWs or Data Discs. The CD-RWs work great on Xbox cause I used the same ones on mine. And he has the same DVD Rom as I do, same version of Xbox as I do. Only thing I can think of was before we resoftmodded his Xbox, it would have trouble reading games at times saying that there was nothing in the Drive, and one time he said that it said "This is not a valid DVD, please stick in your Xbox".
Anyway, is there any file that he's missing that allows it to read Data Discs?

(If I remember correctly) There are no files on the Xbox hd telling the DVD Drive which media to read. I think that's what the firmware or whatever that is flashed onto the drive.
Anyway, I think your friends is just older and probably either need to try cleaning the lens, replacing the lens or replacing the DVD Drive entirely.
It's not very nice to call people useless.

lol. I know it's not, but no one even replied to me on the site, so I consider that useless, when they see a thread and don't care to try and help.
Thank YOU for your help, How should he go about cleaning the lens?

Well you could try and get a lens cleaner, one of the cd's with the brushes on it that usually come with some type of cleaning solution. OR you could try opening the DVD Drive and possibly take a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol or maybe someone else could recommend a better cleaning option? But I've heard that some rubbing alcohol could clean the lens fairly well.

Sorry I didn't respond, I haven't gotten a chance to try those things, but I've heard that cleaning the lens with rubbing alcohol works too. I'm pretty sure it'll work, I hope anyway. lol

With a softmodded xbox, if it dosn't read the disc, sometimes, you just need to clear your cache. It's in the E drive, and a folder named CACHE. Anything in that folder, or in the X, Y, and Z drive should be deleted. It will then read the disc fine. I had the same problem with my box and this is what solved it.

Resolve this yourself then, you don't need anyone telling you what "might" be the cause. Take your drive out of your xbox and put it in his. You know yours WILL read the CDR/data discs. If his xbox won't read them you know its software related somehow. You could put his drive in your xbox and see if it reads them also, to rule out the possibility of his drive not reading them.
As the first post mentioned I believe its the hardware limitation - you think otherwise so prove yourself right.

There is nothing wrong with his xbox, it is just the CACHE files... E/Cache, X, Y, and Z. I have a 1.0 xbox that i got the first week without any modification to the DVD drive and it ran fine after i deleted the CACHE

Thanks guys! It got it working, and then...he messed it up by trying to make it back to normal. lmao. But thanks anyway, I'll know what's wrong if/when mine stops reading.
