View Full Version : PlayTV owners in Poland, Ireland and Norway are a little screwed
Elis has mailed in to let us that MPEG-4 video decoding is used in DVB-T broadcasts in Estonia as well as Poland, Ireland and Norway. Despite, Sony's website stating the PlayTV product is fully European DVB-T standard compliant, it clearly isn't at the moment as it can only decode mpeg-2 video. Elis hopes Sony will release an official comment on this and confirm whether MPEG-4 support will be added in the future.
Hello.
A little bit background information:
I live in Estonia and we use mpeg-4 video decoding in DVB-T broadcasts
(so does Poland, Ireland and Norway (soon Finland will follow)).
Although it is said in wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayTV and
Sony's PlayTV official website that this thing is fully compatible
with European DVB-T standard, it isn't. It can only decode mpeg-2
video. So this is important information for citizens who live in the
mentioned countries. Also it would be nice to get a comment from Sony
wheter mpeg-4 support will be added later or not.
Best regards,
Elis
Thanks for letting us know.

DVB-T2 is using MPEG-4, and it's by no means a standard yet.
Sorry, early adopters. ;)

Always higher prices than in rest of Europe.
Later release dates.
Incidents like this where big company feeds on us by using lower standards.
Limited access to MMO games (f.e. Invite a Friend and Tournaments in WoW)
Coś jeszcze? Or is it enough for you?

DVB-T2 has become a standard, every change is in modulation. Has not so much about codec to do. Both use MPEG2 transport streams. This just a software issue. It even says so in your link.

Here's the document which describes DVB-T standard.

H.264/AVC is there but Sony has ignored it.
