Opinion: No one is winning the console war

Gaming site Gametopius believes its time for various folk to be quite regarding claims of who is winning the 'console war'. Why? Because in their eyes no console has the right to call themselves a winner. The Wii is fun for parties but that's about it, the price accounts for the popularity of the Xbox 360 and its major games are mostly shooters, and the PS3 is a 'glorified' PS2.



The Wii while fun for parties sees absolutely no play from me any other time. It has some nice games, but with such a small selection of games that are for people older the 3, my choices are extremely limited. Adding friends to the Wii is a huge annoying chore and don't even think about then trying to play a game with those friends, you will be there all day reading numbers to each other and trying to figure out why it still isn't working. They have stepped up to fix one big problem which was the lack of voice chat. Nothing is more annoying then trying to play Smash Brothers with someone and having to stop play to call them on their cell phone to see if they have time for one more round.

The 360 is admittedly the most used console in my house but this is mostly because of the fact that friends are easy to add, games are easy to join, and most of my friends already have a 360 because its cheaper then the PS3. The major issue I have with the 360 is also game selection. Its major titles are shooters and I'm no big fan. I play them because my friends play and its something we can play together so we play. As an RPG fan I feel like I am kind of lost among these games but I play anyway. I admit I am kind of a picky gamer but the selection is rather small. You have shooter, action RPG/shooter, and some other stuff that might be ok. My day as an RPG player might be here soon though if all these E3 announcements seem to deliver the goods they are selling.

And oh dear my PS3, what did you do!? You held so much promise and now are really nothing more then a glorified PS2 which I use to play all my Atlus games. Home keeps getting pushed back and we just seem to keep hearing “just you wait we will rock”. Well PS3, I have had you for a year now and my socks are still firmly on my feet. Lets get a move on!

So as you can see, I don't think anyone gets to call themselves the winner of this war yet. I think they all need to step out of the batting cage and swing the bat already! Where are the innovations? Where is the pushing of the boundaries? Why are my socks still on my feet!?

Uh, stop linking to stupid random opinion blogs as something noteworthy... Just because they e-mail you doesn't mean you have to think it's actual news. It's true that nobody's winning the console wars YET but his reasoning is completely off the mark for every system and is clearly biased against particular systems more than others (Wii @ parties? The ****? I thought we get music, drinks and chicks at parties, not games. How do you play No More Heroes, Super Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3 and Resident Evil 4 with company anyway? Agree with him in some aspects, but not completely...
Wii is good to play with friends an such, but as a single player console, fails hard, at least if you don't like Mario, Zelda and some other games listed above. Don't care what you will say "but Resident blah blah blah", it doesn't matter. Why will you play a console that has OBVIOUSLY multiplayer direction, single player?
PS3 is still sleeping, and I'm pretty sad with this, it has great potential, but all that I see is promises and more promises. Don't come with "hey, Metal gear 4 blah blah", because it was a great move from sony, but nobody is talking about it anymore (curious...) and I don't see any good game after MGS4 comes, ONLY MORE PROMISES.
He defended a bit the 360... I disagree with one thing. Even if adding friends is easy and all that, it's hard to find NEW friends there. If you don't have friends that have more friends with that console, you are a bit screwed, because a lot of live players are completely idiots with nothing to do more. Another day I was playing N+ and a kid come to me saying "I'm at the leaderboards, so I'm the best here", so, who cares? If you are in the leaderboards, you have to be good? ok, but most are just people that don't have nothing to worry about, like work or something else.
Also about the 360, MS is trying to create a good console, but if you look really close, it sounds so much like a hardware moded computer (or even a xbox 1 with LIVE add) that hurts... good games, sure, but most of them, you can have at the pc...

Sorry, really no winner on this war, just different opinions and games for consoles that are trying their best, but can't avoid failures...

I think that i that war, I will stay with PSP and improve my PC... it's better, safer and good games will continue to come. The costs are a bit more expensive, but on PC I can play everything that I want and still.............. on MSN or something like a messenger on games (like steam).

Sadly, PSP seems to be a little loser talking about games recently, DS has a lot more options to play, but hey, with PSP graphics, say to DS take their games up to their Mario's @ss! I love my PSP and that's all...

I'd have to say that I think all consoles this gen are just 1.5 versions of their last gen editions. These past 2 years fo rgaming have been pretty crappy compared to the past. There hasn't really been anything that has just wowed or blown anything out of the water yet we have such powerful machines. I personally just want this gen to end unless 2009 is going to be 'great' like we keep getting told.

The Wii may not be a CPU powerhouse, but let's face it, they've changed it more fundamentally than the Playstation brand. First off, who the hell cares that it's the same chip architecture? What if it was a GC CPU that was SO FAST that it had just as much horsepower as a Xbox360 or PS3 CPU? Would everyone call it, um, maybe 10 Gamecubes taped together?

As it stands, it's reportedly twice as fast as the gamecube's CPU. The controller is fundamentally different in a way that mandates totally new forms of game design (to be any fun, anyway), and they've abandoned the GC's gimpy mini-discs for a storage format that is actually half-viable.

I mean, hell, ALL the consoles could be accused of being "glorified" versions of their predecessors. Easily. All of the consoles' "top games" are eerily similar to games on their predecessors.

I think it's also pretty clear that Nintendo is just plain winning. Why? Well...
a) it's sold the most
b) it's still the most in-demand
c) it's the only one that makes profit

Wow. First off, congratulations on the spelling and punctuation, you win the gold in this thread for "The Least Effort".

Secondly, how come you did not mention every 360/PS3 exclusive on that list? You seemed to just pick and choose some random ones and claim the PS3 wins 7 to 5? I don't know if that only includes the exclusives you like, but unless you are new to video games, the list is a lot larger than that.

Thirdly, even though the 360 DOES have more exclusives of the 2 consoles (http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=30268), it does not mean it wins this generation as you concluded above with the PS3. That is just plain stupid. Although exclusives give motives to purchasing one console over another, it does not mean it "wins".

I'm not gonna make a huge list of 360 games vs. PS3 games, but if that day comes when the PS3 "wins the console wars", then you can gloat all you want that you picked the winner. Until then, don't hand me sh!t statistics and conclude something from it.

If I were Nintendo I would be feeling pretty good about this gen.

Pennies to make and no price cut yet in almost TWO YEARS on sale? A Wii Fit Balance Board thats practically impossible to find and yet when it does stock it sells for £70 and flies off the shelves?

Ignoring what Nintendo have done this gen is just plain wrong. I dont know how many they have really sold but Wiki has them at almost 30m units shipped and thats damn impressive considering the Wii sells out almost immediately every time it appears in a shop.

What does the 360 do that the Xbox doesn't? :P I can think of 1 thing but people will be crying and flaming me. They are just suppose to play games, the PS2 was a glorified PS1 and the PS3 was a glorified PS2, the 360 was a glorified Xbox and most likely the 720 will be a glorified 360 and the PS4 will be a glorified PS3. It will go like that forever, but what do you want it to be? The Wii is the only system that changed the way the games are playing, computers in a couple of years will be able to emulate PS3 and 360s easily, but they will never be able to emulate the Wii and it's Wiimote. This guy is an idiot "Where are the innovations? Where is the pushing of the boundaries?" I thought motion controls was innovation, I thought it was pushing the boundaries of gaming. "I think they all need to step out of the batting cage and swing the bat already!" What the hell?
