Hi, im thinking of buying a Qoob chip for my Gamecube.
I see a lot of issues on this forum of gamecubes that are now more brick like...
Wats the risk of this mod, ie success rate? or does it only stuff up when u do it wrong?

Wats the thingy about the pot's for the lazer, have to turn the resistance down or something? wats the go with that? there are a few guys on here that seem to need a whole new lazer kit now, is that common?

Thanks for any help,
Si.

additional:

Where can u get the 8cm dvd-r's that actually work in sydney? can u use normal DVD-r's if u leave the case off?

I dont understand wat extra the PRO gives you over the SX, cna someone explain?

Thanks again,

I modded 10 gamecubes and it's a pretty easy job if you have done some soldering before.

Adjusting the laser is almost never necessary. All the cubes from 2002 work fine without laser tweak. Only my own cube was from 2001 and it required the laser tweak.

Use good media in your cube, not all DVD's work. I should use RITEKG05 media with your cube now.

you can run regular size disks with the case off but its not a good idea cos you'll get dust and crap where you don't want it..

consider getting a new GC case that can take large, regular dvds. then you can run DVD+R media (more reliable) and a lot better value than the small DVD-Rs. a lot of sites are selling qoob chips with modded cases for the regular large disks.

You need to take all the horror stories on here with a grain of salt as this is where a lot of people will come for help. Personally I think it's the best thing I ever did, my chipped PS2 hasn't even been turned on for about 2 months now. My kids are loving it! I have a QOOB SX 1.3c with a PAL GC DOL-0001 and only use Ritek G05s and have never had a problem during a game or during disk check.

it took me forever to get my gamecube to read games right. When ever i played games it would freeze about 10-15 through. I had full sized ridata dvd+r. Adjusted the pot so many times. Didn't work. My games would freeze. I bought fuji film mini dvd-r that too froze. Adjusted the pot. Didn't work. Then i tried the same full sized dvd+r and some how it like the pot settings. I forgot my values but each gamecube is differnt. I tried all the suggestions but none worked. I think the pot setting is a pain in the ass. After that everything is working it is worth it. i can play all my backup. :)

I had never soldered anything in my life before I modded my Gamecube. It may not have looked pretty in there when I was finished, but I've tried dozens of burned DVD-Rs on it now and everything has worked perfectly without and tweaking of the pot or resoldering or anything. It's definitley worth it and pretty easy too.

I use Ritek G05 and never had a problem. 2 frinds of mine also use Qoob Pro and it works without any problems for all of us. Although the install is quite easy and the chip is very good many people still do lousy installs and suspect the chip to be faulty in the first place.
