A new Wii controller patent has been found from June 26th. The new controller is explained as a a game operating device that includes a longitudinal housing, and a holding portion held by hand to be wrapped by its palm. More from this new look controller inside...

Anyway, back to the new Wii controller. The USPO's filing (26th June 2008) for the new controller relates directly to the standard Wii controller patent.

The new controller is explained thus:

"A game operating device (controller) includes a longitudinal housing, and a holding portion held by hand to be wrapped by its palm it is formed in the housing. A direction switch is provided on an upper surface at a position where it can be operated by thumb of the hand holding the holding portion, and a start switch and a select switch are provided backward thereof.

"An X button 46 and a Y button are further arranged in line on the upper surface of the housing. An imaging information arithmetic unit is provided at a front end of the housing in a longitudinal direction in such a manner that an imaging device thereof is exposed from a front-end surface.

"A concave portion is formed on a lower surface at a position corresponding to the direction switch. The concave portion includes a valley and two inclined surfaces. An A button capable of being operated by index finger of the hand holding the holding portion is provided on the backward inclined surface.

"By processing an image signal obtained by imaging an infrared ray from LED modules by the imaging device, it is possible to obtain an operation signal varying according to a position and/or attitude of the controller. "

We are also told that there "is a gun-type adapter 300. The adapter 300 has a butt 302 for holding by hand, as with general gun-type controllers. The butt 302 is provided with a trigger 306 surrounded by a trigger guard 304. A gun barrel 308 extends from the butt 302 through a magazine. Besides, the gun barrel 308 can be detached by a connector 310 with respect to the butt 302."

I don't trust spong, but it looks like a classic controller (it actually looks like a gamecube controller layout) that takes a wiimote.

Could be a bit top heavy if its true though.

lol it is now gone full circle

Nintendo is copying the ps3 dualshock3 (Sorry ....that one was too easy)

Seriously now...put a wiimote in that thing and say goodbye to the good look of a game controler

actually nintendo originally showed this off when they first told the world about the WII

they had a gamecube controler attached to a wiimote

this is prob an update to that and maybe they are actually going to come out with it. this was before the sony sixaxis controller was mentioned and way before dual shock 3. so no copying on nintendos part

i was thinking the same thing, its a classic controller without the cord (wiimote goes straight in the controller) & with different button layout.

huh, think about that for a second.

if such a shell would ever be released...
that would basically be nintendos sixaxis.
you have a "normal" gamepad, but because of the wiimote inside it, it could use the tilt-function.
plus, because the wiimote is still pointing forward, the pointer-function would be useable.

This looks very much like the "controller shell" concept that was talked about when the Wii was unveiled. I actually pictured it looking exactly like this!

Oh dear god no! They took that horrible GCN controller and put it in a GP2X shell!

The C Stick

Weird Buttons

Weak Analog Stick

Annoying R and L buttons

Well I guess we can take this as a sign that the Wii is really just a GC with motion controls.

<!> FANBOY ALERT <!>

so what? the ps3 is the same old system with the same shitty ass controller and upgraded hardware.
same goes for the 360.

at least the Wii is innovative and takes gameplay experience to a whole new level, altho I must admit that it's not perfect yet.

for the record I own both a wii and a 360 and I like em both. I just hate Playstation controllers.
there aren't many good titles on the ps3 at all, sure GTA IV is nice, but it's also available on the 360.
MGS 4 I must admit is a very cool game.
But wait, what's that? The 1st place made room for another game, and it's a Nintendo title.

People should really just try games and give their opinions afterwards. Even tho the graphics of the games these days are a whole lot better than the Wii's graphics, there are alot of titles that look good but suck so hard that I would rather play zelda on the NES.

NGC game controller was awesome to play non-fighting games ( metroid prime, RE4, ToP, F-Zero, etc, the analog controller was just on the right position, better than Ps2 ( which is fitted more for fighting games )... maybe the button were a little akwards, but the roung handgrips are just fine .

... like comments from..mmmhh...let's say... 1 year ago... When every Fanboy and their Dog were saying Wii would loose badly agaisnt others... yeah..right...

Could it be an early design for the Classic controller? The reason I ask is because the retail Classic Controller appears to have clips on the underside that are designed for attaching "something" - I always assumed that something would one day be a Wii Remote (presumably with with some sort of clip on it to allow it to connect to the Classic Controller).

nyko made this, i own two of them. i cant imagine using the classic controller without it. it just a shame no games use motion sensing or pointing when you have the classic controller plugged in. its set up perfect for it.
