Speaking in a recent interview, Epic's Cliff Blezinski has commented that the current crop of Xbox controller's look like alien spaceships and he sincerely hopes that the next Xbox will come with a pad that features fewer buttons. He also said they could do things like a built in camera or a little motion sensitivity.

Epic's Cliff Bleszinski has said that current control pads look like alien spaceships, and hopes the Microsoft's next Xbox will come with a pad with fewer buttons.

"I hope if there's a new Xbox that there'll be fewer buttons on the controller," he told us during a chat about Gears 2's multiplayer.

"This is purely me speculating in my own realm of game development, but if you look at a controller right now it looks like an alien spaceship," he added, going on to point at alternative methods of interaction.

"I think you could do things with a built-in camera or a little motion sensitivity. You look at the Wii controller with less buttons - they added functionality by doing waggle. Not a lot of games use the waggle well, but Super Mario Galaxy for example uses it perfectly. Zak and Wiki uses it rather well," he said.

Could not agree more, I think the design is great!! Comfort is what matters, first to me and what wrong with extra buttons these always come in useful, cause not every one wants to go the wiiiiiiiiii way about thing`s although it may be cool for 5 mins!!!!!!

The current number of buttons on PS3/Xbox is fine. I'd rather press the X button for a certain move rather than trying to remember which way to wave the controller.

It has been that many buttons the last 3 generations.. from N64-PS1 to now.. Why stop with a formula that works?

He is now officially a genius, I think about the same things.
I can also see how Gears would work with the Wiimote.

He is bashing the controller from the company that made his game what it is. The current crop of PS3 and 360 controllers are some of the most comfortable controllers to use! Why add more crap to them, I mean I think we all know that motion sensing is coming but a camera? Come on! Am I supposed to hold the controller in front of my face while I play? Cliffy, stick to what you do best, making games. Leave the hardware designs to the respective companies.

the 360 and ps3 pads are fine i like both to an extent, the ps3 controller looks like a cartoon dogbone. the xbox1 controller is the alien :D
remember kids... its how you use it.. if cliffy had any brains he would of forced KB/MOUSE on MS way back.
Funny, epic abandon the pc fanbase and mutilated UTIII for consoles, yet this just shows they have no clue who they're selling to :D

Agree 100%. The Xbox360 controller was voted the best controller of all time at E3 last year. Beating out the duel shock 2 by a small margin. And I agree with that too.

360 controller is tha best one out there.its just the d-pad that needs to be worked on.position is good, but the pad itself blows for playing games like mortal kombat.
adding a camera is just gonna make it more expensive.

they compliment the wii, yet they wont make anything for wii.

have to agree with the above posters, apart from the abysmal d-pad, the 360 controller is pretty brilliant. i much prefer it to my ps3 controllers and i bought one to use on my pc.

less buttons = less possible actions for character/ingame = solution to a simpler developer experience. And of course, those games that require many buttons would have to start using combos - oh wait, they are already doing that on the current controllers with "too many buttons" so I guess they'd have to quit and go home

I think a Wii like contro for a FPS like Gears of War could ruin the gameplay and in turn lose it's current fan base, but guys... these guys created Gears of War which is one of the best of this generation titles. It helps to thinkoutside the box. Innovation starts with reinventing the wheel.

Ever played Metroid Prime on the Wii?...

Much better controls experience than using the regular controller.

I agree with Him, although for some certain types of games buttons are OK unless you want to use the wii balance board for fighting games...

Innovation starts with reinventing the wheel.

The wheel has served us fine for 7000 years, no need to reinvent it, same goes for buttons

Agree with everything said. The 360 pad is the most comfortable to date and it looks good. I've always liked the PS pad but 360 has it spot on. The original Xbox was horrible though.

They may look really weird. I'm a Ps3 fanboy but they are 10x better then any of the controllers on the market. Ps3 being the worst. Last gen Gamecube looked like it was made out of legos but it was still the best.
