Sony confirms PS3 firmware v2.40 to include in-game XMB & trophies

Over at the official Playstation blog Sony has confirmed that PS3 firmware v2.36 will be launching soon and this will improve the stability when playing select PS format software titles. However of more interest is news that the v2.40 firmware will include the much awaited in-game XMB access and trophies!



A new PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (v2.36) will be launching soon, improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles. We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include “XMB” access in-game. The update will also include “trophies,” an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements. We’ve talked about some of this on the blog previously and know that many of you can’t wait to get your hands on these features. You can expect us to share all of the official details shortly.

id like to hear the excuses for why it took so long, so this is only a matter of a few months now or? its good trophies and the mega-awaited in-game xmb are coming. what about ingame music playback?

I hope this comes out soon and hope a lot of older games support trophies I hope its like on 360 where users can check others acheivements I want to show off how good/bad I am at certain games.

Guess I'll update to 2.36. Regarding the in game xmb access, I personally am not as excited as many on here (I actually don't care in the least bit about it, background game/update installs is better for me), but just so you don't get your little hearts broken wait 'til it's released to start jumping for joy.

I have a couple of worries about this

1. will you get achievements (trophys) on games you have already completed ? - I suspect not, so you may need to play them thru again - not the endof the world but still.

2. Even tho this is a set to work with many exisiting games, were these games written with trophys in mind at the time - e.g Half-life 2 has loads of interesting achievements built in (like carrying the gnome from lvl 1 to the last lvl) as they knew the 360 already had achievements inplace. Basically what I am saying is are the older games all going to get very simple trophys - I completed lvl 1, lvl 2 the whole game etc. whats good about this on the 360 are the more unique tasks, collecting stuff or finding hidding things that are only for achievments etc.

Neither of these worries are that big but I am half expecting that this is only going to be any good on games not yet out that can be written to use it - but hopefully Sony will surpise me.

I'm not updating mine for a while anyway, I updated it to 2.30 for the Store but now that works and so does the proxy so I'm leaving it well alone.

Everyone asking about the in game music.
Once you have access to the XMB launching music isn't a problem, same as in game messaging, checking friends status etc.

Well thats what i heard, i would be really surprised if you have in game access to the music but it won't let you play it.

I'm Gonna piss my pants if the in game XMB runs like crap, I love my ps3 and the XMB for me is better than the 360's, but i'm starting to have doubts, got COD4 for it yesterday and the 360 version puts it to shame (IMHO)

Still, i'll believe it when i see it with my own eyes.

Do you honestly bring your ps3 with you to hotels, friends houses and other states? Honestly I've tried every tv browsing experience from web tv to psp to the wii and they all suck. I've tried using the psp as a browser when out and its horrible and useless. I've tried using the wii browser when it came out and its useless. Honestly when I go away anywhere long term or know I will need web access I'll bring my laptop, not a ps3.
