It is, but Microsoft didn't buy the whole rights for DivX and so they can't do anything with it but just play DVD movies.
On the other side Sony did buy the whole rights and I guess they are free to do anything with them.

Why use DivX in games? Especially since PS3 support the superior H264 codec?

- xbox360 support it before ps3.
- sony announced it's for months already.
- And both have h264 (better video code) form the start.
so ...

What is the point? DiviX sucks and is based off of MPEG-4 Part 2 (MPEG-4 ASP) H.264/MPEG-4 AVC is MPEG-4 Part 10 it requires more processing power to decode but is far superior to MPEG-4 Part 2.
Blu-Ray uses H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, the PS3 natively plays H.264/MPEG-4 AVC why would games devs want to use crappy old DivX?

sony's double standard coming out in full force again. sony's reasoning for bluray was to deliver unparallel quality with untouched and uncompressed files yet there now offering the most widely used video compression codec in there devkit.

I guess everyone conveniently "forgot" the bullshit that was spouted when Kojima "ran out of room" for MGS4.
"compress it, compress it" Go look thru those old threads. They did it so it's one less excuse for complainers. And Kojima was only being modest because of his japanese culture.
The xbox divx playback: don't you have to connect to the net to use it since it isn't divx certified?

No you don't. You only connect to get the codecs. DivX certified means you can encode as well as decode.

Guys, calm down. It's a press release from DivX, a company which owns the rights over an obsolete and dying codec noone will use anymore within the next months and therefore tries to give it a nextgen and 733t appearance by certifying a game console.
Why sould Sony decline such a certification? They have nothing to loose. On the contrary, they can claim that the PS3 is a real media center by telling people "look, the PS3 is DivX certified"
In brief, it's just marketing BS aimed at saving DivX's *ss and giving Sony one more selling argument

i can guarantee ps3 devs will use divx if the ps3 supports it. why you ask? because bluray isnt big enough to pad all the game data in the future and have lots of hd videos :)

ugh? ogh?? i sound like a fanboy because i quote sony statements for the need of bluray only to see a press release for tools that contradicts there standards. wow, so a fanboy is somebody that points out the obvious. everytime somebody says something they don't agree with they throw out "fanboy". the name is thrown around so much in every arguement its almost impossible not to be categorized as one

your hate for sony is so blindingly obvious that I don't think you can try and cover it up. I don't see this as double standards at all Sony didn't say were making bluray so you shouldn't compress anything they said that there is no need to lose quality or processing power. What if in the future somebody makes a game that almost fills the disk but they still want movies why are you complaining about this. only answer I have is that your a fanboy if you want to pick out false statements why did you not say anything about Microsofts motion sensing controller when they clearly said we dont do gimmicks in relation to the SIXAXIS a while back. Please STFU the moderators here really piss me off.

i think ms motion control is an awful idea and think its a blatent ripoff of the wii. i wont buy it and have no interest in it. the only reason it would end up in my house is if my girl needed it to play the new viva pinata. your not going to find me bash to bash, if i hated the ps3 i wouldnt have spent 600 on the system, 55 on the dualshock and well over 500 on bluray movies and games. learn your facts before you accuse somebody you know nothing about and dont assume because i dont like every single aspect of the ps3 that i dont like the system. i dont like the people behind the system i like the system itself. just because i watch a tom cruise movie doesnt mean i must share his views in scientology

Get my facts straight? what facts did I get wrong. I said thats the only thing I can think of tell me why you jumped to this thread complaining about double standards from sony when that "double standards" gives you more as a consumer. it just doesn't make sense to me so please explain. I called people out about microsofts motion sensing because I was sick and tired of hearing blatant fanboys bringing up sony statements but everybody went quite which goes to show that these people aren't against bad statements but just against sony.

1. H264 did better than divx on compression.
2. divx certified = it's software made by divx-inc and nothing more.
3. xbox360 support divx form mpeg4 part2 standart. It's 100% compatable plus you can view other code as xvid too. I not sure about 3ivx and nero's video code (xvid 3ivx and nero ... "all" of it is better than divx)

i commented on the subject at hand with my own input from past sony comments about "the need of bluray". i could careless what is considered to be a biased or fanboy comment because like i said unless you dont comment you will always be called a fanboy no matter what games you play. ms, nintendo and sony all make idiotic remarks but nobody makes as many as sony has in the past, comments that always come back to haunt them within a short time. its because of things like that why i like the systems not the people behind them. if a game is good ill get it but that doesnt mean i have to like public announcements or agree with features to come considering the systems aren't even being touted as gaming consoles anymore but friggin entertainment centers with the ability to play games. media abilities were always funner when they were homebrew, this provided crap doesnt have the same appeal

Divx-inc isn't a good company at all. Once it's official software even contain spyware. And it's Install without user agree (like sony's rootkit. once double click it's ask user to click yes to install ad-software. but that ad-software will install even you click no. And run even after you uninstall Divx)

not true... I can use it while i'm disconnected from live just fine.
you only need live when first installing the codec...
even then its not needed... you can get the codecs from the interwebs an put it on your HDD yourself... I know thats what alot of people with banned boxes did.

Look I never said you didn't comment on the subject but the majority of your comments (if not all) are a bash when on the Sony threads. Its not even public annoucments its everything Home for example. Now if you were somebody who just liked to complain about everything that would have been fine except that you don't really do it on 360 threads.
We're not counting numbers here anyho, who cares who has more BS from their PR department, I certainly don't nor do I care if they are touted as entertainment systems as long as they play games the PS2 was touted as such as well if you're old enough to remember. I find your hate for Sony groundless and moronic, companies are companies, they're there to make money not to be your friend. All companies have most likely lied to you either intentionally or just made a promise they could not deliver. What I find even more moronic is people complaining about stupid things like "Blu-Ray was forced on me" which seems like something your doing. Go out and buy a Ferrari go to the ferrari forums complain that a powerfull engine is not needed because I can't drive that fast legally so that engine was forced on me. same with Microsoft Vista and DirectX. They made a certain spec YOU BOUGHT IT. Sony didn't break your door down armed with a gun, shove a PS3 under your TV and take the money from under your bed did they.

And this confirms what I said... DivX (the codec) is dying, and DivX (the company) is not in a very comfortable position.
They have to develop their own H.264 decoder to not get completely lost.
