I want to replace the umd drive in my psp with a 40gb 2.5" laptop hard drive to store game iso's but need some help. has this sort of thing been done before, and did it work? I also want to turn the umd drive into a usb drive so i can read umd's on my pc. would this be expensive to do?

Mate.....as an Aussie would put it, you dont want much, do ya??
Purely and simply, I dont think this Is possible. Buy 10x 4Gb cards or 5x 8s.
lol.
Besides that, I doubt even a laptop drive would fit, If It even worked.
Cheers

Why don't you just get yourself some lead and turn it in to gold? You might have better luck with that. Cut down on the tweaking buddy.

I've seen PSP with the UMD drive remove and replaced with a HDD. Just check youtube and you will see these modification. Although it has been done, it's not easy to do. Too complicatied. As far as removing the UMD drive and converting it to a portable external UBS device, I've not seen it done. The M33 VSH menu allows you to change the USB device to UMD drive anyway.

I think that one on acid mods was a fake, if someone could get a hard drive inside the umd bay, they could of at least soldered it to the usb internally.
anyway heres a pic of what i was thinking

I don't think PSP's battery can power on 40gig hard drive and PSP together.

Why not?
It can power the UMD Drive and the UMD Drive is optical. I don't think the PSP Battery could power a 3.5 hdd however a 2.5 you could power with any laptops USB. I think you could power it however it would be a very limited time that is why the Datel hardrive was acompanied with a bigger battery. So if you bought the Largest of the available batteries and used a slim PSP because ut requires less power it could be possible. However a PSP slim with its original battery maybe could power the hardrive and PSP like 10 minutes or something. Mostly because the hardive spins the whole time and the UMD spins just when it reads. So with the super large batteries we have seen it would be possible and even usable. However a hdd takes a lot of power so ofcourse waiting for a bigger memorystick or other memory with an adapter is a better ide....

Just wait a couple of months and buy an adapter for MicroSDHC and mayeb a 3x 16GB MicroSDHC cards... believe me, it will be a lot better ( and comfortable ... and economic !) than using a 40 gb 2.5 on your PSP...unless you want to do it "for the challenge".. :o mmaybe a a NANO HD would be better...

I agree with the last guy. There's already a 16GB memory card and I'm sure there will be a 32GB card soon. And microsdhc cards will be at 16GB this summer. Let me know if you manage it though. I'm currious to see if it can be done.
