PS3 ad pulled for misleading backwards compatibility claim

PC World have been ordered not to show a "misleading" 60GB PS3 TV advert again which said that it "plays your PS2 games as well." This was deemed to be misleading by the Advertising Standards Authority who noted that when the advert was broadcast it could play around 80% of PS2 games.



A PC World TV ad for the 60-GB Playstation 3 games console showed a sales assistant connecting the console to a flat screen TV. A colleague arrived and said "Oh we've got the 60-gig PS3 back in stock". The first sales assistant replied "Controller and 3 games all for 379". The shot cut to a close-up of the console and the notice next to it that read "Only while stocks last!" His colleague said "and it plays your PS2 games as well." The on-screen text throughout the ad stated "£379. Save a total of £165. Total separate selling price £544.96 [crossed out] £469.96".

Issue
The complainant challenged whether the ad was misleading because he did not believe all Playstation 2 games could be played on the Playstation 3.

Response

DSG Retail Ltd (DSG) said the backward compatibility of Playstation 2 software with the 60-GB Playstation 3 was approximately 80%, but that this figure was constantly increasing as more software patch downloads became available via the Sony Playstation Network.

Clearcast said DSG had confirmed the 60-GB Playstation 3 was backwards compatible, which meant it could play Playstation 2 games.

The ad should not appear again in its current form.

1 of sony biggest mistakes this gen was screwing gamers out of BC. Clearly it was removed to try and keep people buying ps2. But after promoting BC and then talking crap about xbox 360 not having 100% bc with xbox games, they turn around and remove BC all together.

They still should have atleast added emulation and left that in the new 40 gig units instead of confusing everyone trying to make them guess if the ps3 could play ps2 games or not.

I got the 60gb ps3 just for backwards compatibility. Hooking the ps2 up to a 1080i/720p lcd tv looked like crap. It was the selling point for me. I'll assume that ps3 still region locks ps2 games. Was thinking of ordering Berserk off of ebay. So it looks like the games that don't work in the NA region are mostly not a big deal. Just for fatal frame 3 yesterday and it looks great on the ps3. It's a shame that they cut corners on the 40gb, that was the one I was originally looking at until I found out it was useless as far as ps2 goes. Thanks for the links! I'll use this to check whenever I go ps2 purchase happy again!

You guys have to keep in mind: This is the EUROPEAN 60GB PAL PS3, which did not have an EE+GS chip inside (just a GS)! Functionally, the PS2 BC is the same as the 80GB PS3 world-wide. 80% is great compared to the XBOX 360 BC, but at least the XBOX BC qualified on the XBOX 360 isn't only "partially" supported (the user isn't forced to compromise by skipping FMVs and such).

The 60GB NTSC PS3 has MUCH higher PS2 BC (near 100%).

To be honest, Ive never had a game crash while playing on the xbox 360 (that i recall).
Ive had the system crash with rrod then i fixed that though. But ive never had a game crash on me and ive played most of the games out there (unless they total suck).

This gen of consoles has been pretty disappointing so far. A few awesome things on the 360 (gears, dead rising, lost planet) and a few on ps3 (heavenly sword, ratchet and clank, uncharted). Don't care much for the wii yet at all. Yes, I have all 3 (technically the wii isn't mine and I don't really care). this is how it works for me - 360 single player, ps3 multiplayer online, wii drunk fest bowling or raving rabbids. If it wasn't for the news on the patch for gta4 today, I would have been trading it in for something that works. Consoles have turned into pc's with all the shitty patching and crap. A few console configurations isn't anything compared to the hundreds of thousands of pc configurations that can be had. It's no excuse for releasing a game that crashes online and then corrupts your bloody save game. Last game I buy from these idiots (aside of red dead revolver 2 ;) ) I'll pretend it's from someone else :D Opps, did I rant.

Many (most?) 3RLoD reports say that the console froze and then 3RLoD'd on them when powered off and on again. When it strikes, the fault has a 50/50% chance of happening on either the warming or cooling of the board, so it should be about half of the time during gameplay.

you are 100% correct. every thread turns into a flame war with the fanboys defending their console and dissing the others. i can't remember one thread that hasn't turned into ****.

i don't think the mods can justify banning people for being a-holes and fanboys or this site would be pretty barren. most of the worst comments with the most vile talk and offensive language seems to come from the sony camp. monitor the threads and users, keep track and keep count, the sony defenders are very apprehensive towards other consoles and their owners. if a user doesn't think what they think or own what they do, then they will attack that indivual(s).

i don't understand why people have to act the way they do, but all camps (sony, microsoft and nintendo) are guilty of this, just some more than others.

it's not just maxconsole, it's most websites on the net. it's pretty sad when someone owns all consoles and can't even visit one of those manufacturers respective sites / forums without being called a fanboy just for owning the 'other' console(s).

Please tell me you dont actually believe that. Sony took out bc to keep ps2 sales going. nothing more nothing less. Yes removing the ee chip was cost cutting but to rip out emulation is just plane weak. Why give people a free ps2 when sony can sell them 1 still if they wanna play a ps2 game like gow2.
Sony PROMISED 100% BC! They ran their mouth how ps3 would play all ps2 and ps1 games and how microsoft offered a crap set up with the 360`s BC. Plane and simple sony lied and screwed people out of bc. If they wanna cut price the could have pulled that blu-ray drive that is not needed. But it was always about $$$ and sony was loosing tons on ps3 while ps2 was picking up the slack. So sony didnt wanna cut into those sales.

Not true... each rrod has a error code (well most of them are known) and it can be from power supply to heat to hardware to bad update. So your chance of getting rrod in game is low. But if you have bad ventilation and play for 10 hours you might get it from over heating but it will not be the game that caused it.

I have 3 rrod system and it never goes out during gameplay. It only rrod during start up. But once it starts its fine, ive left it on for 16 hours straight and it ran fine. Because its a rrod issue doesnt mean its 1 certain issue. My error is a hardware failure. But i fixed it and now it workes perfect.
