I am taking a trip to Israel in a month and I want to buy an all in one device (minus the cell phone). My use of the psp will be based on the following in order:
1.video player
2.game
3.internet
4.music

so my question is: can i buy an external hard drive to hook up the psp? i would hate to have to buy 20 different memory cards for movies that I will use over a 10 day trip.

Well, Im no expert, but heres my experience...and thoughts

Firstly, I got into the PSP scene, as early as last Christmas.....I had heard a lot about them, and thought that they would be excellent gifts for my boys, from Santa, so I purchased 2 phats....a white and a black, so they didn't fight. lol

Anyway, I had a friend mod them for me, and before I knew It, after a bit of reading I was doing all the things, that CFW allows you to do...

But I was SO JEALOUS of the kids.......I had seen what they could do, and I wanted one for myself...lol

In my opinion....these little units are a "jewel"....a piece of art....and are so well made....I love them

Anyway...I got one, for myself, and did a LOT more reading.....managed to upgrade It...made myself a Magic Memory stick, and purchased a tool battery, and haven't looked back, really.

I use mine...mainly for testing, so I can give the kids games and music.

Ive a rather extensive Xvid and game collection, so basically Ive converted a heap of PS1 games, tried a few emulators, converted movies to great quality......

I found a good Mp3 player, called Lightmp3...

But In answer to your question......I have yet to find anyone who as managed to find a way of attaching an external HDD to the PSP!!

Done a LOT of reading, and Im pretty sure Its not possible...

So...basically, you're stuck with Memory Cards atm.....but they are getting pretty cheap now.....I only buy cheapies on EBay, and currently have 3x 4Gb and 1x 2GbHS cards...plus a 4Gb In each of the kids, they have all worked fine for months now, and I am continually reading and writing to them.

So,,,convert your movies...you can get them down to 400Mb and lower, depending on the quality, but Imo, they are great quality and play perfectly...I use Imtoo PSP Converter, and only takes a short time...like 10 mins on my dual core for a full movie.

So 8 or 9 movies on a memstick, If you're lucky...

As for Mp3s...like I said...I use Lightmp3..

I dont convert my mp3s to lower bitrates suck as 92kbps...and most of my music Is 192kbps, or higher...so an average music rack Is around 4.5Mb per track....thats around 900 or more songs you could easily fit to a memory card. So...maybe 90 full albums!!

Internet If you have access to WiFi, or Wifi hotspots, Is a piece of cake...Im pretty sure all Airports now have free WiFi hotspots, as well as Cafes and other places...

And Games....well I haven't been real Impressed with the selection of PSP games available.....they seem every locked Into a couple of genres, but I guess Its all what sort of gaming you are Into..

Being that I am a little older than probably most who play with PSPs....lol, I am more Into the arcade-ish style of games...I played a lot on the Sony playstation as a teenager..so I convert them....you may fit 6 or 7 converted games...for example...the Crash Bandicoot Collection, 1, 2, and 3, Is around 500Mbs In size.

PSP Isos...theres a lot of small ones... but most of the larger one...like FFVII are well over a gig..

So I guess Im saying...buy 4 or 5 memory sticks....Im paying around $30au atm, including postage, for 4Gb sticks, and you CAN get original Sony Sticks, If you look hard enough, for that price, and you are an aggressive Bidder..lol.

Anyway...Final roundup, of that LONG read...Yeah mate...Get one anyway....lol They are worth having.

Good Luck on your trip.

Cheers

If you got the money to spin you can get a 16GB memory stick from Amazon.com for $217. That should hold enough stuff to last you for awhile.

WTF? Where the hell do you get your info from? I use an 8GB microsdhc with a memory stick adapter and it works just fine. Lots of people have the 16GB memory stick and they work just fine. You need to do some research before you say things here that makes you look stupid.

Just bring a loptop with you.
here you can use it to:

play video or upload it to psp.
upload your backup games to your psp, music, and emulators if any.
charge your psp through usb.

plus you can use if avail. (wifi) connection to your loptop to psp also. skype can be enable.

Buy a MicroSDHC adapter instead of MS, unless you wish to pruchase original PSX games from PSN. With MIcroSDHC adapter you can ahve everything faster on your PSP, isntead the sucky PSP's USB transfer.
Another thing is buy extra battery, PSP's battery life sucks !, specially if you try to run emualtors , videos, etc.
Depending on your taste on games, PSP has greater or lesser value. For me it kind sucks if you buy it to watch videos..:o, But PSP games ar ok... PSX games are great, and emualtors are a biiiig plus.
As an Mp3 player, is much better and more confortable to buy those 4-8 GB sticks, with loooooooooong battery life, and you won't even feel it ( Unless you like to hold the PSP on your hand while running or making sports.. :D )

If you can afford it, buy a UMPC instead with a 80GB or 120GB Hard Disk. I have 30 PC games, the entire Snes and N64 set and CPS/Mame all full speed on my one. I don't really play my Psp any more to be honest.

they look promising, specially to read PDF books, watch mvoeis, etc, specially when the PSP and NDS resolution is so low, and processor lacks power to play newer games decently. ( N64, NDS emualtionm, etc )
