View Full Version : Sixaxis discontinued
Sony has revealed some very sad news. A Sony rep has said that the Sixaxis has been discontinued. “Sixaxis will no longer be offered after it’s completely sold through at retail (likely by the summer timeframe).” he said.

I doubt any one is truly surprised that Sony has discontinued this controller, what is surprising is that they waited this long. Hell the 20gb was discontinued with-in 2 months.

Sad news? Is that sarcasm or something?
but anyway, its not like you lose the sixaxis motion sensing with the rumble controller so i dont care.

Why would they discontinue something that is core to their product? Unless of course like the SPE it is a pain to develop with ;-)

Surely this only means that the SIXAXIS only controller will be discontinued and that the Dual Shock 3 will replace it and will feature SIXAXIS.
It would not make sense to offer a dual shock and non dual shock version of the controller moving forward. (Welcome back Mr. Rumble) I got mine ceramic white fae Japan :D

You do realize that they still have motion sensing or sixaxis in their DS3 which will be out as early as next week, right?
Cover up, your ignorance is showing.

this is probably a joke. it wouldnt make sense for sony to discontinue the sixaxis. at this rate what are they going to do? keep cutting back till they have only the box to sell with nothing else? yeesh.

Wow some of the the comments in this thread makes me wonder about how thick some people are lol.
So I will point out the obvious that some cannot fathom. Sixaxis controller without rumble will be discontinued and replaced by sixaxis with rumble know as the dualshock 3. Simple as that no aprils fool or Sony abandoning anything yet.

Its astonishing how many people cant comprehend a news item.
The Dual shock 3 is coming out soon, so Sony will be selling that INSTEAD!!! Maybe some ppl dont realize, but the DS3 includes the Sixaxis technology AND Rumble! So while i agree the 60gb discontinuation was dumb, in this case its a win/win. You gain rumble and lose nothing, so obviously they wont be selling the inferior, rumbleless Sixaxis controller anymore when they have a better product with the same features PLUS rumble...

Well I have only had one controller since I got my PS3....been waiting for this so I could buy 3 more.
I think the DS is useful in some games and I welcome it back.....I really don't care if they lose the motion sensing though. It appears tacked-on and I really hate it when they throw it at you in some game your enjoying (like maybe Ratchet and Clank).

these sixaxis controllers are £28-35 and have no motors but with triggers. ps2 controllers are down to £13. sony will have to eradicate one model to prevent price fixing allegations over DS3. DS3 should be made the standard anyway sony have made the right move.

I believe that the Sixaxis controller offers game designers and developers far more opportunity for future innovation than rumble ever did. Now, rumble I think was the last generation feature; it's not the next-generation feature. I think motion sensitivity is. And we don't see the need to do that.
Wiser words were never spoken:D

Fat chance, I think It was all just a huge scam to make the first 10million ps3 owners pay for their controllers twice, nice $60million scam.

This is what happens when ignorant people read an ignorant news headline at maxconsole. This is not "sad news" , the Dual Shock 3 does EVERYTHING that a sixaxis controller does, has tilt functions AND has two rumble motors for force feedback. If you are worried about a dual shock 3 controller draining more battery life, you can disable rumble in the options. If anything, this is great news. Think about it, if you don't care about rumble, you are now going to be able to get a rumble-free sixaxis controller used for a cheap price. If you love the rumble feature, now these controllers are the new standard. Any person that uses the term "xbots" is a retard. Why don't you go fly an airplane into the microsoft building since you're such a fanatic? All 3 major consoles suck ass equally, so leave it at that.

Why is anyone going to want the sixaxis controllers after the dual shock comes out? Obviously this was eventually going to happen. They phased out the original Playstation controllers when the dual shock first came out. Why would anyone pay $50 for a controller that has sixaxis, but no rumble, when for a similar price you can buy a controller that has both? Pointless to keep making them.

Its amazing at how this site allways puts up "this is a rumor" on everything.. but when its something real they only half ass the story.
They are discontinuing the six axis...... anyone who pays attention would know that the Dualshock 3 is being released... which will have the same functionality...
Meaning why in the world would they keep around a "prototype" when the real controller is coming out in the next few weeks...
lol... sony gave up on competing with the Wii.... thats one of the dumbest comments I have ever heard here.. and that is saying a lot

Why the hell would Sony even bother competing against such a weak ass system with only 2 good games that are worth playing? Go play with your stupid Wii and shut the **** up! But back to the topic, only 1 week left till the Dual shock comes out! Can't wait to get my hands on it and play Drake's Fortune again!

of course sony would discontinue the older sixaxxis. it's being replaced by the dualshock 3. i retired my sixaxxis controllers when i got my ds3's back in december.
same controller, it just vibrates and weighs a little more. there is still the 'useless' motion sensing in the dualshock 3's, it works just as the old sixaxis it replaces. it even has dualshock 3 / sixaxis on the front of the controller next to the microusb port.

sooo, no more motion sensing? that was my favorite feature of the game. how will ratchet and clank work now??
also dual shock is over-rated... sony got a great business model. continually sell overpriced garbage rebadged. How much of their hardware actually gets used? Firewire port on the PS2? eyetoy? like.. they had sooo many great ideas that just got nowhere. maybe they should invest more time into developers than vats of acid to trip on and come up with the ideas they can't support.

Hey they guy said what he had to say at the time (remember that ongoing case with Immersion), but I'll give him credit cause on his way out from sony he once again said something that was inline with that same statement. Also he wasn't mistaken, or do you think that the wiimote's appeal is rumble?
Fat chance, I think It was all just a huge scam to make the first 10million ps3 owners pay for their controllers twice, nice $60million scam.
Scam? why will the sixaxis controllers stop working? no one is required to buy DS3's to continue to use their ps3. There are still many people who don't really care much about rumble. Personally I only care about it for GT, and maybe MGS depending on what they do with it. Most games on the ps2 I just turned it off, and I don't think that will change much with the ps3. Do I really need to have the controller shake each time I cast "Fira" on a FF game?

I am glad, the original SIXAXIS was wayyy to light and always felt like it was about to slip out of my hands. (Not like I play my ps3 much at the moment anyways....) Frankly, I thought this would have happened a while ago when the new controllers were introduced...guess I will be buying two new controllers in a little while, thanks Sony...how about you let us trade in our "old" ones for the "new" ones....?

Yeah, this just means that they won't be called Sixaxis but will have it still in it. They are the Dual Shock 3 controllers, still with Sixaxis, they can't just discontinue sixaxis because of the games that use it. But I hate Sixaxis on the PS3, never use it.

I actually crack up playing motorstorm with the motion sensing. It's pretty good when your by yourself, but the minute you get into a group of cars it gets so comical trying to maintain control.

I"m sorry but are you mentally challenged? there is no need for SIXAXIS anymore, because the Dual Shock 3 has replaced it.

This was said 6 times above your post. Starting with the news source. (Yeah they are called links. Clicking them takes you to the original story)
If you and the rest of the Thick Headed Clan learned to read previous posts before trying to be superior to everyone else with your pathetic need to be heard then this post and your post would not have be needed.
I really don't see why people find it necessary to post several times what has already been said.

Well if you read after someone said what I said a few where still not getting it so I added my voice hoping that those who are clearly thick would get it. But now with 4 pages I still think some people are beyond help. So yes I read the whole thread before posting. So if you do not understand why I posted I question your reading and thought process.

well i cant complain they are dropping the sixaxis for the DS3 which includes sixaxis AND rumble, i wouldn't see the need for selling both since this isn't a console there is no need for a "skimmed down cheaper version" but sony is getting too accustomed to throwing out a confused or unfinished product to hold customers off then release something refined and kill the previous. i would hate to own a discontinued item regardless of it being discontinued for a good reason it stll hurts my wallet lol

I can't believe this would surprise anyone. They did this with the original Playstation, only TWICE.
First there was the standard digital pad, then the dual analog, then the dual shock.
