View Full Version : Strange problem with Qoob

I've looked on a bunch of forums and I can't find a solution to this problem anywhere. I installed my Qoob Pro, and I believe I did everything correctly. When I startup a regular original game, it boots up just fine. However, if I use a burned game (Using Fujifilm disc) the disc reads, it says "Running Game", but then instead of running the game, it continues to display the Qoob screen, but the image starts jumping all over the screen, as if the display is screwed up.
Also, GCLinux seems to load up just fine.
Really strange....
Btw, I've tried it with Qoob 1.3a and 1.3c, they both do the same thing.
Any tips would be appreciated.
-UPDATE-
One game, Animal Crossing, will boot, but the picture is all screwed up, almost as if it is running in the wrong mode. But, I've tried Auto, and I've tried forcing all 3 video modes and it hasn't made a difference. This is the only game I've gotten to go this far.

whats your GC ? PAL - NTSC? Did u check for DRE errors before you run your midea? You know, GC backups doesnt have so much chance to run perfectly on any miniDVD, so u must choose a good media, also good release, but carefully, and test for DRE, some Mini DVD s even after were burned, wont even load the game or show glitches, jumps, stuck on the way..etc Use teh tool DRE checking ( hold A when u boot the game, before Qoob screens appears, releases and press again for the test start ) if you get DRE right at beggining means your media is very very poor. So you msut look for a better one, write slowly ( maybe 4x or even 2x works for me ), Check your cables, dotn boot with the USB cable plugged on Qoob ( off course !)Leave your settings on Auto for the beggining, leave Sound fix off for test purposes.

ok. My system is NTSC. I have not tried the DRE thing yet, but I will when I get home (At school now). By the way, I am using full-sized DVD's with the replacement case. The DVD-R I am using is only a 4x, but I will try to burn at 2x just to be sure. However, I don't think it is the media, because the game now appears to load and run just fine, it's just the display that is messed up. Like I said, it looks as though it's running in the wrong mode, even though I've tried every video mode and it does the same thing. The strange thing is that an original game boots just fine.
I took another look at my soldering job, and to me, it looks just perfect. I'm normally not great at soldering, but I thought I did rather well this time.
Anyway, I'll play around with it some more tonight and check the DRE. Thanks for your help, and if anyone else has any tips or has had a similar problem, please let me know ;)

...some Mini DVD s even after were burned, wont even load the game or show glitches, jumps, stuck on the way...
Thats the burners problem, not the mini discs. I have a NEC 3520a, and I can use just about any mini dvd-r out there, with no problems. All I use are Mini's, and I have never had a single DRE(beat over 15 games so far, and played pretty far into many others).
As for your problem Funkwheat, What burner do you have? What media(use nero or DVD info pro to find the media code)?
Make sure you have the latest firmware flashed to your burner. It sounds to me like animal crossing is the PAL version. Download GC-Tool, open up the iso in that program, and see whether it is a PAL or NTSC ISO.
And you might need to do a laser tweak, but before you do that, make sure that you have the latest firmware flashed to your burner, as well as letting me know what burner you have, and the media code of the discs that you are using.

I checked the ISO, it is a PAL ISO. Does that mean I can't use it with an NTSC system/TV at all without it looking all screwed up?
Also, my burner is a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-105, and I just updated the firmware right now. The media code is "FUJIFILM03", or so says DVDInfo Pro.
I just burned another game, Wario World, at 2x, and it boots up!... But, it only gets as far as displaying "Nintendo", and "Dolby Surround Sound", then it just kinda stops....
Maybe it is my DVD media? Maybe it is my laser? How do I go about tweaking my laser?
My original games work fine, though, so that's the only thing leading me away from the laser.
Thanks again
UPDATE:
I just got another game to work (Mortal Kombat), but it only worked well once, then it crashed during a battle, and now it won't get past Loading... Starting to really sound like a laser problem!... Or media ><
Also I'm starting to realize that almost all of the ISO's I downloaded are in PAL format... Go figure

Your burner should work well enough, as well as your media. I suggest do a laser tweak, it sounds like it just doesn't quite read the games well enough. If your laser is over 300ohms or so, go down to about 220 ohms, and see how well your games work. If it is at or around 200 ohms, go down 1-5 ohms at a time, and test the games until they work well.

As for games, do a search on google for "joh's gc". Make sure they say NTSC or USA before you get them.

All right! I did the laser tweak, lowered it to just under 200 Ohms. Everything seems to work perfectly now (Except the PAL games I downloaded, which were more than half). So, only US/NTSC games will play on an NTSC system, period? There is no other way to make them play properly? I thought that was part of the reason for forcing the modes, and for having a mod chip in general. Oh well, anyway, I can always just download US/NTSC ones. Thanks very much for your help.

Some PAL games have an option to switch between 50mhz and 60mhz. If they do, a menu will come up when you are holding the B button as the game is booting. NTSC mode is 60mhz.
For games that don't have that option, you can use the Qoobs force option. It doesn't work perfectly, but it works most of the time. To force it, go into the configuration, and change the game mode to NTSC. There are two things, one is the bios forcing(for the Qoob menu), and one is the game forcing. Make sure you set the game one to NTSC.

Yeah, for some reason even when I try to force it, it still runs in PAL, I dunno why.

For NTSC users is really hard to play PAL games without 60 hz support ..wow, never realized that before , my TV supports 60 hz ( I am on a PAL region )so really I can boot any Media around, I jsut can t force my GC to NTSC or jsut like your GC stops playing the game, but on Auto and PaL runs everysingle one, I juse have one that deosnt run ( laugh if you want ) and is the classic Luigi 's mansion that deosnt boot furhter than Nintendo. must be an old release. Anyway I guess the problem is support for PaL games for Ntsc users. I keep my laser on 180 ohms , and runs pretty fine, my drive jsut accept specific trade marks, not all of them, msut be a Burner Problem is LG.
