According to Mike Jackson of Future Publishing, retailers have told him that they expect the 80GB PS3 to hit the UK by the end of the Summer. Moreover, they seeked comment from Sony on the matter who stated that the new SKU may come soon although they failed to give a firm date.

I think that would be a good move, a 40gb system (price cut) and a 80gb system (£299)

Don't quite think the 80GB will be £299 but it most likely mean a 40gb price cut on the condition that the 80GB sells more and becomes a part of some pack like 2 games with it.

What's the specifications ? Same as 60 GB Version (Card reader, 4 usb, 2x hdmi) or 40 GB. I will buy one in a few moment. May i wait this summer ? I'm i france.

Thanks for all.

i don't care about the upgrade as i can always upgrade my 60gb (when i get the cash lol) and on top of that i have 4 usb slots, a nice chrome metal part, ps2 parcial backwards compatibility, which i'm guessing 100% this new 80gb model will not have all that.

I'm hoping this means that Sony really does have a comittment to continue support for PS2 compatibility in the near and far future.

With all the rumors of Sony dropping SKUs in favor of the 40gb mobo unit, I was starting to think that Sony was moving towards a PS3 business model that had no factor for backwards compatibility.

Hopefully they will contnue to tweak the current soft/hardware combination to be more compatible. As it is, it's already pretty good. A lot of the problems seem to be with FMV sequences in PS2 games.

HOLY BALLS OF ASS!!!

Sony Europe doing a smart move for once in their live!?

OH

MY

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODD!!

As a European Citizen, I find almost too shocking to read! But then again, theres jackshit on the PLAYSTATION Store so why would you need the HDD Space

You have

BD Live *eats 1GB of your HDD*
Capcom Games *eats 5GB of HDD*
PlayTV *eats HDD*
SingStar *Its very popular in Europe, eats HDD*

Consider those and yeah you'll see it coming

In terms of storage 80 gig is tiny. Why don't Sony just put a 250 gig unit or bigger inside and be done with it?

I dont know why this is news. Its got 80GB....big deal.

It should be the same price as the 40GB (which should be cleared off all the shelves) or its a waste of an SKU.

Any idiot with half a brain can buy a 250GB 2.5" SATA HDD for under £60 and install it themselves surely? Thats what I did.

Christ you can get 120GB for under £30 now.

I'd say the big deal is not the drive size, it's the Backwards Compatibility.

I don't think the EU has had a BC system since their 60 GB unit was discontinued. And even that was a hard/software combo.
