i have softmodded numerous xbox,s, installed various modchips, and pretty much have a pretty good idea about how the xbox runs but i need help on this one. i have a 1.6 that is softmodded with a 80gb hard drive. the other day i decided to cut out the back wall and install some usb ports and mess around with installing a wireless adapter. because i am lazy i did not remove the motherboard. it was a pain in the ass cutting the heat shield without removing motherboard so i was kinda rough with it. i put it back together and it worked fine. two days later my audio stopped working.
the only thing i can conclude about the reason the audio stopped working is because i was so rough with it 2 days before and mite have broke something. i find it odd tho that the audio would stop instead of everything. is there any linux programs i can use to test audio?
any input would be appreciated

That's definitely an odd situation you've got there. Have you tested to make sure it's not just your cable from the xbox or some other audio connection/patch cord? Internally all I could guess is that you're shorting out the solder connections on the mobo that are part of the connector port. Perhaps if there are metal shavings from the heat sink in there. I'd blow the case out good and see if that does anything.

i re-opened my xbox to take another look at the motherboard and I found what is probably the problem. I found rattling around on top of the board a little capacitor that I must have knocked off when cutting the back metal. I can't believe that I knocked off a capacitor or something and just my audio went out. Have you ever heard of anyone maybe installing another pci sound card on to an xbox or maybe use an onboard audio chipset from another motherboard??? there doesn't seem to be a lot of information about the audio or audio problems on the xbox.
If anyone has an idea let me know. thanks

I'm stumped on that one...very surprised that was all that happened with a capacitor knocked out. I would suggest re-soldering it, but I know that could be a little trick if you don't have experience. I've never heard of anyone messing with the sound system on the Mobo of an Xbox, and I doubt you will find any info easily. I would seriously suggest you try the guys at Llamma (http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/repairs.htm). They actually do repairs and are a great business, but they also have a forum on their website where maybe someone will know more about a solution for your problem. And you can probably email or call them too.
