Digital Innovations Motorized UMD Cleaner for Sony PSP Review
Have you ever noticed how your UMD discs are covered in a layer of plastic, except for a small cut in the window in order for them to be read by the PSP laser? Now this poses a problem for all those who wish to keep their UMD’s clean and free of dust, it’s a difficult task to get to the un-covered layer of a UMD disc without laying your fingers on it or applying significant pressure…step in the Digital Innovations Motorized UMD cleaner for Sony PSP, a low cost yet effective Motorized UMD cleaner for the PSP, just attach your UMD on to the unit, push the button and let your UMD have the clean of its life!
Digital Innovations Motorized UMD Cleaner Specification
- Automatically cleans PSP UMD’s
- Safely cleans UMD cartridges
- Motorized and easy to use
- Advanced micro-fibre technology removes dust, dirt and finger prints
- Compact and portable design
Let’s get down and Dirty
This product arrives in the standard Game Dr Excelerator blister packaging sporting a vibrant blue design. Opening blister packaging is always a bit of a pain, whatever method you use to open it just be careful!
Upon opening the packaging, you will be presented with a dinky little black rectangle shaped device with a rounded top. The motorized UMD cleaner is actually a lot smaller than I expected, and stands no taller than my little finger with a depth of approximately 2cm’s. Again the product displays a nifty little ‘UMD Cleaner’ logo design which is akin to the official PSP logo, of course different enough not to order a warrant a law suit from the big ‘S’. Located at the bottom of the device is a small textured grey button which operates the motor.

In order to begin using this device you will need a small cross headed screwdriver to remove the cover and insert two AA batteries, once you’ve inserted the batters just pop the casing back on and screw cover back down, this is a ‘one off’ job providing the life span of your batteries of course. Just slide back the back compartment of the product, which has a huge down arrow pointing down and your UMD is ready to get clean!
Cleaning Windows
Now to commence the great PSP UMD spring clean, all that is required is for you to line up the centre of your UMD disc to the small circular shaped button on the product and align the UMD window to that of the products cleaning brush, you will hear a satisfying ‘click’ sound once you successfully attach your UMD – now you’re ready for the big switch on to commence.
Hit the grey button and voila your PSP UMD cartridge will be spinning around in a daze receiving the clean of its life. The revolutions are quite impressive; enough to clearly make the front face of your UMD disc become all blurry when spinning – not bad power from two AAA batteries, not bad at all. The UMD disc remains perfectly attached during the process, it appears that a small magnet is holding the product down so you can hold it, sideways, upwards whatever way you want without your UMD falling off.
As the UMD spins around, the small brush passes by all the inner UMD disc through that little plastic window, giving it a solid clean in area’s that were very heard to reach previously, manually or via other means. The product box recommends you to hold the grey button for around 10-15 seconds in order to do a complete clean of your UMD cartridge, however if you’re anything like me, you will find yourself constantly pushing the button and watching your UMD’s spin just because in a ‘sad’ way, it’s really actually quite fun to do the cleaning for a change! They say pictures are worth a thousand words, by my estimates videos must be worth alot more words - so we made a quick video of this product in action - Click Here.
Putting the Fun back into Cleaning
I’ve seen other UMD cleaners on the market, some come as manual bundles with special fluid, some come with a handle that you have to yank around but I have to say I really like this one because of the motorized and seemingly efficient aspect of it. The initial buzz of continuously pushing the little grey button and watching my UMD movies spin and clean hasn’t worn off yet! All in all, it’s a compact, effective and fun way to clean your UMD cartridges.
Positives
+ Totally motorized cleaning system
+ Small, Compact and sleek looking design
+ Stability of UMD cartridge on platform
+ Makes cleaning a UMD cartridge easy and fun
Negatives
- No cleaning fluid or special ‘grime remover’ provided
